FAQ
What are Moody Balm's Lip Balms made of?
92% of my Lip Balm recipe is Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter and Beeswax, all known for their skin-nourishing A and E vitamins. The rest is Flavor Oil (usually fragrance + a coconut oil), Vitamin E Oil, Coconut Oil, Stevia Sweetener and Soy Lecithin (a humectant).
The colorant in Moody Balm Lip Balm is less than 1% of the recipe, and includes Red 40 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 1 Lake and castor oil.
What are Moody Balm's Balm Bars (AKA Lotion Bars) made of?
94% of my Balm Bar recipe is Capric Triglyceride (a natural combination of coconut medium chain fatty acids and vegetable glycerin), Mango Butter and Beeswax, all known for their skin benefits. The rest is Oat Extract, Isopropyl Myristate (a non-greasy, synthetic oil that helps the bar absorb into the skin, rather than sitting on top), Vitamin E Oil and Flavor Oil (usually fragrance + a coconut oil).
The colorant in Moody Balm Balm Bars is less than 1% of the recipe, and includes Red 40 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 1 Lake and castor oil.
How should I care for my Moody Balm?
Your Moody Balm is quite resilient! It's formulated with a special kind of beeswax that suppresses the development of graininess, so you generally don't have to worry about your balms below ~90f/32c. I mean, don't tempt fate or anything (e.g.- leave it in your car in August). If you keep your Moody Balm out of the sun and in a cool, dark place, they'll stay in good shape for about 6 months, though my ingredients are formulated to ideally hold up for at least a year.
If you buy in bulk and/or have a balm you know you won't be using for a couple months, I strongly suggest putting them in the fridge to keep them as fresh as the day they were made.
Why is my balm grainy? Is my balm moldy?
No! Well, it's almost certainly not, anyway. If you find white or semi-transparent dots forming across and/or through your balm, it's 99% of the time crystallization of the butters in the balm. Sometimes referred to as graininess, this is an entirely harmless and cosmetic change that some balms undergo when they get too hot or are left exposed to air for too long. Under these conditions, the natural acids in shea/mango butter come apart and little crystals begin to form. To clarify, your balm is still perfectly safe to use!
If you find your balm has gone grainy and you want to fix it, you can melt the balm down in the microwave (in the tube with the cap off for lip balm, or in a microwave-safe container for balm bars) and let it re-solidify into its previously smooth form (though it's still safe to use in its grainy state). But I find it easier to just keep the balms in a cool, dark place to prevent graininess from even forming.
If, however, you receive your balm in this state or have any other concerns, please reach out to bryan@moodybalm.com so I can make it right!
When will my order ship?
To keep your balms in peak shape, I ship out orders Monday through Thursday to avoid them sitting in warm warehouses over the weekend. While I'm confident in my testing that the balms survive happily during transit in all but the hottest months, I feel it's better to be safe.
During said "hottest months", I ship Monday through Wednesday, and package my products with cold packs and insulation. I also only offer "priority shipping" or faster during this time, to make sure the balm gets to you as quickly and not-melted as possible!
In either case, if you know you will be out of town for several days and your package will sit in a hot mailbox, I recommend waiting until someone is home to receive them.
If, against all odds, you do not receive you Moody Balm intact, contact me at bryan@moodybalm.com and I can make it right!
How will my item arrive?
Depending on the size of your order, you will receive your Moody Balm products in either a small bubble mailer or a small box (the box itself may come in a bubble mailer). In either case, keep an eye out for that Moody stamp on your package!
Can I update my order after it's been placed?
I ship out orders Monday through Thursday, and Monday through Wednesday during the hot seasons. If you place your order after 2pm PT or on one of my non-shipping days, feel free to reach out to bryan@moodybalm.com and let me know what changes you'd like! I can change things such as delivery address, order quantity and type.
